Free concert in Ballina

The WhistleBlast Quartet — Ken Edge, Mary Curran, Síle Daly, and Andrew Synnott — will perform a free public recital in the Ramada Hotel, Ballina, at 6pm tonight (Friday September 25). Children from Rehins National School who had a three day project with the quartet will perform a short piece of their own.

Claremorris Foróige

Registration for Claremorris Foróige will take place on October 2 from 8pm to 9.30pm in Claremorris Town Hall. Registration is €20 or €30 for a family. Parents or guardians need to attend for registration. The club will commence on Friday October 9 from 8.30pm to 10pm in the town hall. Man left waiting for ambulance as service cries out for funds

A serious situation could have been fatal if it weren’t for the goodwill of ambulance personnel in Castlebar. The overstretched service meant that a seriously sick person was left to wait almost half an hour for an ambulance despite falling ill only a short distance from the ambulance headquarters in Castlebar last Friday. If it weren’t for an off duty paramedic, who came to the rescue of the sick person by starting his shift early, the fate of the man could have been a lot worse. However while the man waited for an ambulance to arrive his condition deteriorated rapidly.

Bail for six men involved in Ballina family feud

Disqualified councillor awaiting Circuit Court hearing

Keith Martin, who was disqualified from Westport Town Council earlier this month for a delay in submitting his election expenditure, is awaiting a date for a Circuit Court hearing in Castlebar into this disqualification and is also requesting the Labour branch compile a shortlist of candidates for co-option “in the event that I am legally unable to retake my seat or unable to retake my seat for personal reasons”.

Meeting hears officials accused of “collusion” in McHale Park development

The McHale Park planning row will roll on to the end of October following a meeting of Castlebar Town Council on Tuesday night. The special meeting had been convened to consider a motion put forward by Independent Councillor Frank Durcan which called on the council to refuse the granting of planning permission for the retention of the TV broadcasting tower at the multi million euro development at the ground.

Small group protest at Mayo’s two Charles River facilities

A group of six protesters staged demonstrations at two Charles River Laboratories in Mayo this week. The members of the National Animal Rights Association staged the protest outside the gates of the laboratories in Carrentrila, Ballina, and in Glenamoy a short distance from the controversial Corrib Gas project.

‘I never wanted to be Dana’, O’Leary tells Knock on Yes campaign stopover

Slightly later than advertised, despite Ryanair’s usual record of arrival before time, the familiar figure of Michael O’Leary strode into Ireland West Airport Knock last Tuesday morning with European flag in hand, which he quickly draped over the podium at the head of the room. Along with O’Leary was European Transport Commissioner Antonio Tanji. The two men on first glance appear as strange bedfellows for the Yes campaign, especially when Commissioner Tanji constantly mentions his support for passenger rights in relation to air travel, something that O’Leary tells the assembled crowd is something he will vehemently fight against.

Councillor irate with manager over Westport House masterplan

At a four and a half hour meeting on Monday evening in which Westport town councillors continued their discussion on a draft town development plan, a debate on the listing of the Record of Protected Structures, in which an inventory of 150 additional structures were recommended by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, led to heated discussions as regards the inclusion of structures in Westport House and the Westport House Wall.
