The road safe roadshow project will make sure over 1,000 of Mayo's teenagers are aware of traffic dangers before they get behind the wheel themselves. The pupils were boisterous and high-spirited going into the AXA Roadsafe Roadshow at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar, but there was hardly a dry eye among them when they emerged from the hard-hitting presentation just over an hour later in previous years.

According to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation there are 21 people being treated on trolleys at Mayo General Hospital today out of 435 nationwide. The HSE say the hospital’s emergency department is under pressure and has advised patients to attend their GPs our GP out of hours service if it is not an absolute emergency. Some elective admissions have been postponed. Contact the hospital for information.

Castlebar Fine Gael town councillor Ger Deere has warned of the dangers of people walking on frozen lakes and river surfaces. While many of these surfaces appear to be strong enough to support the weight of a person, the risk of any ice breaking is very high and could lead to serious accidents. The dangerously cold weather is making this particularly hazardous as the water is extremely cold.

Sinn Féin county councillor Gerry Murray has deemed the Government response to the big freeze as ‘farcical’. Cllr Murray set out a number of steps that still need to be taken to address the hardship caused by the freezing weather.
“The arctic weather is causing huge hardship across the country – for those unable to leave their homes due to ice and snow, those without water or heat, those who cannot afford to meet the extra costs of heating their homes through this prolonged cold spell,” Cllr Murray said.
