Acupuncture treats pain in a variety of ways, the most direct being when a needle is inserted into the body, causing the brain to release natural painkillers called endorphins. Releasing endorphins does more than mask pain — it also relaxes tense muscles and delivers fresh blood to the area where the needle is inserted. This can speed healing and recovery for tissue that is damaged, such as torn tendons in the neck or back sprain, or it can aid an area that by its nature tends not to get much fresh blood, such as the cartilage.
