Dietitian Heather Miller who holds clinics in Balla, Castlebar, and Ballindine, this week talks about how to deal with allergies and intolerances.

An estimated three per cent of adults and six to eight per cent of children suffer from a food allergy, with 20 per cent of the adult population 'thinking' that they have some form of food intolerance. Food allergies occur when the body’s immune system inappropriately acts against a protein within food - known as an allergen. Antibodies are produced as part of this response and a complex chain of events occurs leading to the symptoms such as eczema, asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and in its most severe form —life threatening anaphylaxis.

Whether or not this is the most depressing day of the year, January can be one the months most associated with a low mood and the disorder known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Symptoms of SAD may consist of difficulty sleeping or difficulty waking up in the morning, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, weight gain, irritability, and withdrawal from friends, family, and social activities; all of which can lead on to depression and a feeling of hopelessness. Irish Cancer Society concerned over rising lung cancer rates in women

At the launch of the Irish Cancer Society’s Lung Cancer Awareness campaign 2012, the society has expressed concern at a recent report which shows lung cancer has overtaken breast cancer as the biggest cause of cancer death in women in Ireland for the first time. This year the society is encouraging everyone to Look After Your Lungs, know how best to prevent lung cancer, know the signs and symptoms and if you are concerned, go to your GP.
