Vhi Healthcare pays €26.8 million in claims for Mayo customers

Vhi Healthcare paid out €26.8 million in claims for the healthcare needs of its customers in Mayo. The biggest spend involved claims for the treatment of cancer amounting to almost €4.6m, including just over €1m spent on claims for breast, bladder, and prostate malignancy. Orthopaedic procedures including replacement knee and hip joints, fractures, and back problems accounted for a further €4.2m of total spend, followed closely by heart and circulatory conditions which cost €3.2m to treat. Claims benefit of €1.45m was allocated to cover 750 claims for arthritis and rheumatism.

Customers from Mayo admitted to hospital for treatment of digestive system problems such as stomach ulcers, gallstones, inflammatory bowel disease, etc, incurred costs of almost €2.5m. Additionally, €2m was allocated for claims associated with the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and included expenses relating to the treatment of strokes, brain haemorrhage, damage to nerves, and many other conditions. Some €2.8m was allocated to investigation of non-specific symptoms and illnesses and claims for which no final diagnosis could be established.

Mayo Man wins UCD Start-Up Award

PurOrigin, a new venture focused on designing and developing novel, energy efficient, domestic appliances, has won the University College Dublin 2012 NovaUCD 2012 Start-Up Award. In addition to the award the promoters of PurOrigin were presented with a €20,000 prize fund after being declared overall winner of University College Dublin’s 17th NovaUCD Campus Company Development Programme.

Mayo’s young people asked to protect Ireland’s environment

ECO-UNESCO, Ireland’s environmental education and youth organisation, is making a final call to young people across Ireland to take environmental issues into their own hands. Due to popular demand, the registration deadline for the ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards 2013 been extended until Friday December 21. The programme recognises and rewards young people who create environmental action projects that directly affect and influence their local communities.

ECO-UNESCO is calling for young people from every community in Mayo to take part. “Last year more than 5,000 young people took part in the Young Environmentalist Awards. The creative, innovative, and forward-thinking projects that they produced have had a direct impact on over 200 local communities. The environment is our greatest natural resource: these young people are amazing caretakers, and deserve to be recognised for their efforts,” said Elaine Nevin, national director of ECO-UNESCO.
