Rendezvous line up a number of new events

The Rendezvous Bar in Balla has lined up a number of new nights of entertainment to keep you occupied over the winter nights. On the first Friday of every month the Rendezvous will host a Texas Hold-em competition starting on November 4, it will be a €50 freeze out with a €14,000 starting stack. There will be an early bird chip-in, before 9.15pm and light refreshments will be served.

Glen Campbell brings his good-bye tour to Castlebar

On Sunday November 13, legendary country singer Glenn Campbell will say his farewell to fans in Mayo when his good-bye tour stops off in the Royal Theatre. The Tour sees Glen supported by his two daughters and his son’s band, performing many of his greatest hits that include ‘Gentle on My Mind’, ‘By the Time I Get to Phoenix’, ‘Wichita Lineman’, ‘Galveston’, ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ and ‘Southern Nights’.

An evening with Julian Lloyd Webber

Cellist Julian Lloyd Webber’s 60th birthday gala at London’s Royal Festival Hall earlier this year was, in his words, a celebration of the “beautiful, temperamental instrument” that dominates his life. Now Julian brings the instrument - the Barjansky Stradivarius cello, dated 1690 - which famously gets its own seat on airplanes - on his Irish tour, Travels With My Cello: An Evening with Julian Lloyd Webber. The tour begins at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, on Wednesday, November 2, at 8pm.

Local jobs under threat after Aviva job losses announced

Jobs in Castlebar may be under threat following the announcement that Aviva is shedding almost 1,000 staff throughout its Irish and European operations, due to the merging of Aviva Ireland with Aviva UK and the restructuring of its European regional operations.

The slashing of 950 jobs at the insurance company was announced to staff on Wednesday morning, following which Aviva staff voted on Wednesday evening in favour of industrial action. The job losses comprise 180 roles from Aviva Europe and 770 from Aviva Ireland — which includes job losses in the branch networks, and large centres in Cork, Galway, and in the Dublin headquarters.

Louisburgh potter Anthony O’Brien presents his documentary double

In January this year Louisburgh potter and artist Anthony O’Brien travelled to Tatiko, a small village in northern Nigeria to film the traditional potters at work. The Tatiko potters are all women, who work without potters' wheels, kilns or any specialised equipment. The pottery they make is for everyday use, for cooling water, storing oil and grain, and for cooking over the open fire. But what makes their pottery so special is that it is stunningly beautiful, finely decorated in a rich red clay. There are some 50 women potters in Tatiko, making hundreds of pots every week, which are all sold in the local market. People come from all over northern Nigeria to buy their work.

The tour coincides with the release of Glen’s final studio album, Ghost on the Canvas, which is released on Monday August 29. He has sold 45 million albums, had 81 songs on the charts, won Grammys and numerous other awards and has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The Outlaws are coming to Hotel Newport

The Outlaws have carved themselves out a niche as one of Ireland’s top country attractions, playing every corner of the country to enthusiastic crowds wherever they go. They are coming back west on Saturday week October 28 when they take to the stage in Hotel Newport for a show that is not to be missed. The band who are based in county Monaghan have been picking up awards all over the country since they first took to the stage. The group have also toured Scotland and UK many times to rave reviews.
