Direct from the Met in HD for your delectation: As part of its spring opera series, the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar presents Verdi’s popular masterpiece Rigoletto, live in HD direct from The Met in New York on Saturday, February 16 at 5.55pm. Director Michael Mayer has placed his new production of Verdi’s gripping tragedy in Las Vegas in 1960. In this production, inspired by the antics of the Rat Pack, Piotr Beczala is the womanising Duke of Mantua, Eljko Lucic is his tragic sidekick, Rigoletto, and Diana Damrau is Rigoletto's daughter, Gilda.

Southern Tenant Folk Union live in Ballina Arts Centre

Fresh from their appearance on the Late Late Show last Friday night, Edinburgh based alt-folk stars Southern Tenant Folk Union are returning to Ireland for a nine date tour this month. Their second stop on the tour will be in Ballina at the Ballina Arts Centre, next Friday, February 8 at 8pm. The Year of the Hiker at Achill Sound Hall

The reinvigorated Island Drama Group brings its version of The Year of the Hiker to Halla Acla at the Fairgreen, Achill Sound on Saturday February 2. The Year of the Hiker is a demanding three-act play by John B Keane. Under the direction of JJ McNamara the complex drama deals with lots of human emotions, always acknowledging Keane’s humour even in the darkest situations. The Island Drama Group portrays all the complexities of the play in a high quality performance.

Tuesdays with Morrie comes to the Royal

For two nights only this heart-warming exploration of friendship and life written by Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom comes to the Royal Theatre, Castlebar. This performance will be directed and produced by Breda Cashe, and performed by Terry Byrne as Morrie Schwartz and Andy Murray as Mitch Albom. It will take to the stage in the Royal Theatre on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23 2013 with doors opening at 7pm and the show taking place at 8pm. Fascinating archive of films of Mayo coming to Castlebar

The Irish Film Institute presents A Mayo Ciné-Concert, a fascinating programme of archival films about Mayo accompanied by live music performance at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Tuesday, February 5 at 8pm. This remarkable programme of films from the IFI Irish Film Archive features films made in and about Mayo by amateur and professional filmmakers. It includes: Whaling Afloat and Ashore - the earliest documentary made in Ireland filmed at a whaling station on Iniskea in 1908.
