The annual summer classical music festival in Bofeenaun church returns this July in its 10th anniversary season. A group of outstanding classical musicians will again be filling this beautiful church, set against the dramatic backdrop of Nephin Mountain, with a blend of familiar and less familiar pieces of music from all periods, introduced, as always, with their trademark humour and insight. This year there will be three concerts – on Thursday July 11, Saturday 13, and Sunday 14 – each with a different programme of music. Once again, there is huge demand for tickets, so order yours early.

Two exhibitions at the Custom House
Running until July 7 at the Custom House Studios in Westport are two new exhibitions, one by Vida Pain and Amanda Rice. Vida Pain says of her exhibition: “Partial glimpses of familiar and overlooked images form the basis of my painting. Throughout everyday life and repetitive journeys I am confronted by anonymous structure vying for recognition against seemingly mundane backdrops. Misplaced architecture and abandoned mechanical objects are of particular interest to me, as is the contrast between old and new.”

Ballina Arts Centre presents Juliet Turner on Friday, June 28 at 8pm. This multi-talented singer/songwriter has some hints of the old standbys in her folk-inflected music: Nick Drake, Carole King, even a bit of Kirsty MacColl in her vocals. However, Turner’s blend of melodic and lyrical folk, pop, and electronics also sits nicely next to contemporaries like Beth Orton and Emiliana Torrini. Turner is currently working on a new collection of songs due for release in 2013. Tickets cost €15 or €12 with concessions, for more information call 096 73593.

Fri, Jun 07, 2013
The brilliant singer/songwriter Paddy Casey performs at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday June 27 at 8pm. Paddy Casey has been the forefront of the Irish music scene since his debut album Amen (So Be It) in 1999, while his second release Living became a massive seller in Ireland, out-selling even U2, and containing the hit singles “The Lucky One” and “Saints and Sinners”. In the following years Paddy has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with that very band on their Vertigo Tour, he has had week long sold-out residencies in Dublin's prestigious Olympia Theatre and RDS, and performed on the CBS hit chat show The Late Show with David Letterman.
Now Paddy returns with his fourth album The Secret Life Of, recorded, produced, and mixed at home in Paddy’s kitchen by Paddy and Pat Donne. “It’s my first completely independent record,” confirms Paddy, “a throwback to a recording style I used to have before I signed a record deal.” And the rest, as they say, will be history.
