GMIT launches business start-up programme

The one-year programme is a collaboration between GMIT and Athlone IT, and provides entrepreneurs with business skills, networks, facilities and supports necessary to navigate the business start-up process. It is delivered in GMIT’s campuses in Galway and Mayo, and in Athlone IT. Applications are now being accepted.

Banks must learn to function in the interests of the business community and the economy in general, according to Fianna Fáil TD Beverley Flynn. Speaking in the Dáil on the Finance Bill, Deputy Flynn said that she was concerned that money was not being made available to small businesses which are going through difficult times.

The north west branch of the Construction Industry Federation (CIF), which includes Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim, is delighted with the decision taken by their executive body to unanimously reject the pay terms of the draft national social partnership agreement. The industry is now seeking a ten per cent reduction in rates in order to safeguard jobs.

There was good news for businesses yesterday when it was announced that Bank of Scotland Ireland has said it will lend €1 billion to consumers and businesses in 2009.

Westport Woods Hotel and Spa has been awarded a special commendation at the Sustainable Energy Awards 2008 for an energy efficiency project which it has undertaken. The award, which honours excellence in energy efficiency management, was presented by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) at a ceremony on Thursday November 20 in Dublin. Westport Woods Hotel and Spa targeted lighting and control of electrical equipment as part of an energy efficiency project to reduce energy costs. The project achieved savings of 29.5 MWh and 17.7 tonnes of CO2. The Sustainable Energy Awards are presented to organisations from across Ireland which have demonstrated excellence in energy management in the past year.
