The Chambers of Mayo have collectively issued a statement calling on all of the councillors of Mayo County Council to “ensure that immediate action is taken to secure the small businesses in Mayo, in what is an extraordinarily difficult business climate.”
The statement adds: “In order to preserve the rates base, we ask you to immediately secure a reduction of at least two per cent on commercial rates for this coming year.”
The Chambers also ask that a task force be set up to preserve the town centres in Mayo, with the Chambers available to “take a representation on this force”.
The Chambers believe that initiatives such as a reduction in commercial rates, reduction of development levies and a rate-free period for 12 months for new businesses in town centres should be taken, and ask that these issues be addressed now.
