Elverys Sports, the family-owned business of Stauntons in Castlebar, has teamed up with the ISPCC which it has now designated as its official charity partner. The partnership, which will involve all 54 Elverys Sports stores, will raise vital funds for the ISPCC enabling the charity to reach out to and support thousands of Irish children currently facing adversity in their lives. A fundraising initiative just launched is the sale of a stylish gym bag for €2 with all proceeds benefiting the ISPCC. The gym bag is available in a variety of colours making it the perfect stocking filler gift for Christmas.

Up to 58,000 young jobseekers in Ireland are likely to emigrate in the next 12 months, according to research conducted by the National Youth Council of Ireland. The findings relate to a study carried out prior to this week’s budget - which showed that 70 per cent of 18 to 25 year olds questioned said they intended to emigrate in the next year unless prospects in Ireland improved. The study also highlighted the wish from students that the Government would invest money in the budget in education and work experience to help stem the flow of forced emigration.

Recent analysis by European insurer Aviva has shown that people in Mayo need to save an additional €9,100 a year to live adequately in retirement. Mayo’s annual pensions savings gap, the difference between what is currently being saved and expectations for retirement, stands at €550 million, the equivalent of an average €758 per capita per month of working age or €9,100 a year. These are among the findings of a comprehensive analysis of Ireland’s retirement landscape to date by the company.

Gaeltacht based companies have been seriously affected by the national and global economic downturn and as a result, net employment in Údarás na Gaeltachta supported companies fell by 771 - or 8.8 per cent last year. According to the Údarás Annual Report just released, total employment in client companies now stands at 7,472, with just 710 of these created as new jobs throughout 2009.
