Council for Justice and Peace opposes cuts to Sunday pay

Commenting on the Government’s proposal to cut premium pay for Sunday workers, Bishop Raymond Field, the chair of the Council for Justice and Peace of the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference, has said the proposal to cut Sunday premium payments is a “prime example of a decision that would prioritise economic considerations at the expense of the well-being of citizens and the good of society”.

Bishop Field said the value of Sunday as a collective day of rest cannot be overestimated. “For Christians, this is a day central to the practice of our faith and our core position is that on the Sabbath day all non-essential work should be avoided. The protection of Sunday as a day of rest is vital to the physical, psychological and spiritual well-being of so many people in our society. Sunday is a time for the strengthening and protection of family life. In many households it is the only time when the whole family can be together,” he added.

Westport businesswoman is new Brand Ambassador for Towns of Excellence

Entrepreneur and founder of Irish Business Intelligence Olwen Dawe has been named as one of the new ambassadors for the Towns of Excellence programme, which has been officially launched in the west of Ireland. Towns of Excellence is a national initiative which has been set up to research, recognise and reward towns and businesses for achieving excellence in a variety of business disciplines including customer service. The Towns of Excellence Institute is committed to helping raise the bar for business standards in businesses and towns throughout Ireland. The process for registering is as simple as logging on to www.townsofexcellence.com.

Olwen, who is based in Mayo, founded Irish Business Intelligence, which provides coaching and consultancy services to small businesses, start-ups and developing business in the areas of development, communications, planning and advice. Olwen joins existing ambassador RTÉ’s Retail Therapy star Senator Fergal Quinn, who launched the programme nationally at the end of May.

Sixteen per cent unemployment in west

The CSO quarterly national household survey figures released today show that 33,600 people are unemployed in the west. The figures, which relate to the first quarter of 2011, show that the region’s unemployment rate has increased to 16 per cent compared with 14.7 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year. This is the third highest unemployment rate in the State after the southeast and the midlands.

Mayo Open Coffee Club looking at exporting during a recession

Over 28 people attended the Mayo Open Coffee Club speed networking event which was held in association with Castlebar Chamber of Commerce.

Next month's meeting explores the topic of exporting, and Tom Murphy from Pamex will talk about how he started his company in a recession, giving a good insight into his experiences of exporting outside of Ireland. MOCC is taking place in the Harlequin Hotel, Castlebar on Wednesday July 6 at 11am.
