New business for Mayo clubs launched

A new business venture and website which will become a community hub for Mayo clubs has been officially launched. OnlineClubMembers.com is a website dedicated exclusively to the promotion of sports and recreational clubs with more than 10,000 clubs in its listings.

OnlineClubMembers.com offers Mayo clubs and groups a virtual meeting place for their interests as well as personalised websites for a fraction of the cost of setting up their own individual websites

FreeTradeIreland.ie working well in Mayo

The national reuse website www.FreeTradeIreland.ie, officially launched by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny in Castlebar earlier this summer, is proving very successful in Mayo and is responsible for the reuse of almost 40,000 items nationwide so far.

It has been a busy year musically for Killala-based singer/songwriter, Dennis McCalmont. Last summer Dennis co-wrote and composed a number of songs for the sensational Terry Reilly/Tommy Marren musical production On A Wing And A Prayer, the story of Knock Airport. The production was a huge success selling out shows at The Royal Theatre, Castlebar, and raising much needed funding for the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice. Earlier this year, Dennis' song 'Carousel' was short-listed in the final of the Irish Daily Mail Fighting Chance competition for unsigned artists.

Two Westport pubs win Licensing World awards

It was celebrations all round for the staff of Uncle Sam’s Bar at the Mill Times Hotel and The Porter House, Bridge Street, Westport who both picked up awards in the 2011 Licensing World Bar Awards. Joe O’Malley is the proud owner of both pubs. The awards were presented at a glittering black tie event attended by over 300 members of the Irish pub and licensed trade in the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel, Dublin.

Uncle Sam’s Café Bar won their award for Best Hotel Bar, alongside the celebrated Vintage Crop Bar in The K Club, Co Kildare. The Porter House received their award in the Best Music Pub category.

Mayo retailer appointed to national Spar Council

Michael Mullahy, retail manager of Corrib Oil Group which includes 13 Spar stores across the country, has been appointed to the National Council of Spar Retailers (NCSR) for 2011/2012, after being nominated along with 11 of his peers from across Ireland to represent Spar’s 460 independent retailers in developing the group’s overall strategy and policies.

Addressing the issue of alcohol in Mayo

Recent findings have revealed that Mayo has the highest number of alcohol related deaths in the country, a startling, bleak figure, which shows the misuse of alcohol in the county and the need to address our society’s issue with alcohol. Locally, support and leadership is needed to make this happen and through the work of the Western Region Drugs Task Force, via their community liaison worker, help and advice is at hand.

Irish banking system continues to stymie job creation

Ireland’s banking system is still not functioning as a business banking system and until it does job creation will be stymied. That’s what Dara Calleary TD told the 31st Annual MacGill Summer School in Glenties, Donegal.

“In order to maximise opportunities from the renewable sector, we should adapt an all island approach, establishing an All Island Renewable Energy Company with an examination of the possibilities of a common planning and tax system specifically for renewables,” Deputy Calleary also commented during his speech.

#SMEcommunity is a group set up on Twitter by SMEs for SMEs, with the aim to support, encourage, help and advise each other through social media. It started with a simple tweet on June 16 between Debbie Harper of Tús Nua Designs and Kehlan Kirwin from FocuSMEIreland. Very quickly other Irish business people joined in and by the end of the evening #SMEcommunity was trending in Ireland.

The Cost Plus phenomenon comes to Mayo

It is refreshing to see some positive news on successful trading in Ireland when there is so much doom and gloom around. One company that looks to be bucking the trend is Cost Plus Sofas, which now has 20 megastores Ireland-wide from Dublin to Cork and from Sligo to Waterford, including the official opening of two new stores this weekend at Castlebar and at Tullamore. Another couple of stores are scheduled to open within the next two to three months. Every new store also provides useful new job opportunities to the local community.
