Four Castlebar athletes taking part in New York City Marathon for Western Care

Final preparations are being made by four Castlebar athletes who are taking part in the 2015 New York City Marathon. Lorraine Toner, John Geraghty, and husband and wife Karen and Seamus Devaney will all run the Marathon in New York on Sunday November 1 in aid of Western Care Association.

This is not the first marathon for these runners as they completed the Rome Marathon in March this year. “It’s a fantastic achievement to train and complete a marathon, so adding in the fundraising element makes it extra challenging and worthwhile,” says Karen Devaney, Fit for Life and Mayo Athletics Club member. John Geraghty, an experienced marathon runner, has also used his events to support worthy local charities over the years. He cycled Geneva to Barcelona for Croí and has run the Belfast marathon for Cancer Care West. Mr Geraghty's fiancée and father have both previously worked for Western Care and he is delighted to be part of this fundraising drive.

The group have organised a number of events over the last eight months and would like to thank everyone who has supported them so far.  National school teacher Seamus Devaney and fundraiser Lorraine Toner have both stated they are grateful to everybody for their help and know this will spur them on through the 26.2 miles, especially through the last dreaded three miles!  The four have set up a fundraising link for anyone who would like to support Western Care and sponsor the team, find it on www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/63045_running-new-york-4-western-care-association html or on Facebook
