Mayo Pink Ribbon hits a new fundraising high

2015 was a gala year for Mayo Pink Ribbon as it announced a staggering fundraising total of €110,643 for the year. This is the highest amount ever raised and the organising committee is full of praise for everyone involved in the fundraising efforts. Monies are generated by a combination of events including the Mayo Pink Ribbon Cycle, which takes place every May Bank Holiday weekend, and the Mayo Pink Ribbon Golf Classic.

“We are absolutely overwhelmed by the total amount raised,” said Lourda McHugh, chair of the Mayo Pink Ribbon committee. “People are remarkably generous, both with their time and in the amounts they donate to breast cancer research. We would like to thank everyone who helped in any way, especially our sponsors, from the bottom of our hearts – we couldn’t have done it without you. We are only a small committee but it is the whole community of Mayo that pulls together to make this such an exceptional event. This year people from 22 counties around Ireland, as well as from abroad, took part and the feedback was inspirational.” The other hardworking and tireless committee members are Marita Staunton, Yvonne Horkan, and Mary Loftus.

Over half a million euro has now been raised by Mayo Pink Ribbon for breast cancer research and the results of such fundraising can clearly be seen in improved treatment and recovery. Mayo Pink Ribbon particularly encourages everyone to be mindful of their own health and to get themselves checked regularly.

The date has already been announced for the seventh annual Mayo Pink Ribbon Cycle in 2016; it will be Saturday, April 30 and as always there will be a choice of three routes for participants. The exact routes have yet to be announced but they are always scenic and well marshalled. The refreshment and lunch stops along the way have become the stuff of legend, as has the barbeque at the finishing point. Nobody ever leaves a Mayo Pink Ribbon cycle hungry! 2015 was the best attended Mayo Pink Ribbon cycle ever – roll on an even bigger and better one in 2016.
