The makeITsecure taskforce issued a series of tips to Mayo people to promote the safer use of the internet among business, consumer, young, and family users. The taskforce highlighted to people the increased security issues associated with the internet.
The makeITsecure campaign is led by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources in partnership with Symantec, Irish Banking Federation, Microsoft, BT Ireland, Three, 02, Vodafone, Eircom, and Comreg.
Always make sure you use strong internet security software and ensure you keep software up-to-date by installing the latest updates provided by the software vendors.
Use complex passwords and keep them private. Change them regularly and do not use the same password across multiple accounts or websites.
Always make sure you backup your important data. That includes documents, pictures and emails. It is vital to ensure that your data is protected, recoverable, and accessible.
Always make sure you are using a secure connection when shopping online. Watch out for https:// and trustmarks and stick to reputable companies you trust.
Stay alert against cybercrime. Avoid clicking unknown links or opening attachments from people you do not know in email, social networks, and IM.
Do not click on pop-ups, unexpected links or shortened URLs as these could be infected with spyware.
Never reply to an email requesting personal information. No reputable company will ever ask you to do this.
Do not sustain online contact with people you do not know – do not arrange to meet people you have only communicated with online and be wary about what people tell you.
Consider what sensitive information is stored on your smartphone or mobile device and always use a password to protect it.
Always read the terms and conditions regarding privacy on social networking sites.
Always research potential service providers before allowing them access to your sensitive data.
If you are a parent, talk to your children about potential online dangers and encourage them to talk to you about what they do on the internet. Use parental control software to avoid them stumbling across inappropriate content.
