Transatlantic cable could land in Old Head this autumn

The elected members of the West Mayo Municipal District were given an update on the America Europe Connect 2 subsea fibre optic cable project, which is due to land at Old Head near Louisburgh, at their February meeting this week.

Andy Hudson of Aqua Comms gave the elected members a presentation on the current state of the project, explaining that it was hoped the cable would land at Old Head in September or October this year, and that the project is currently at the foreshore licensing stage of the process. Hudson outlined the benefits expected of the cable, which should see increased capacity between the US to Ireland and on to Europe.

Once the cable lands at Old Head, it will be connected in with the existing Aurora Network which goes on to Dublin and there will be no need for trench digging to connect the cables. He also outlined that Aqua Comms have been in constant consultation with stakeholders, including fishermen, in relation to the project and a community fund has been set up to benefit effected communities.
