Climate Strike events in Mayo today

Fridays for Future Mayo, supported by XR Mayo, will be organising a local climate strike in Castlebar, today, Friday, November 29.

Brother and sister, Maude and Theo Cullen-Mouze from Clare Island, have both been striking outside Mayo County Council offices every Friday since the beginning of September.

Maude (13 ), who attends Sancta Maria College in Louisburgh, is organising the Castlebar strike for today, where all are welcome to attend. Theo will be attending the Dublin strike, as he is then travelling by ferry and train to the COP 25 UN conference in Madrid as one of two Irish delegates for Fridays for Future.

Actions will be taking place in over 150 different countries and in half a dozen locations around Ireland, including Mayo. In addition to the Castlebar strike at the Mall, Coastal Communities for Climate Action are organizing a strike in Westport between 1pm and 2pm at the Octagon.

"If you care for your future, join us on strike as no one is too small to make a difference", said Maude. She is hoping that anyone in the Castlebar area (or further afield ) will use their lunch break to join the protest against government inaction in the face of the climate crisis.

The global climate strike movement began with Greta Thunberg a year ago. On September 20, over seven million young people took to the streets in a call for climate action, including thirty thousand who went on strike in Ireland.

Two weeks ago, the country's first Youth Assembly on Climate Change organised by RTE, took place in Dáil Éireann and presented Minister Bruton with their recommendations. At the beginning of this month, eleven thousand scientists signed a letter to warn of ''untold suffering'' in the face of the climate crisis.
