There have been three road deaths in Mayo so far this year, according to a new report issued by the road safety office in Mayo County Council.
The report was circulated this week to members of the Roads and Transportation Strategic Policy Committee of the local authority at their first meeting since the local elections earlier this year.
The report showed that to date there had been three road deaths in the county, along with 29 serious injuries so far this year. This compared to nine deaths on the roads in 2018 and 12 in 2017.
The total number of fatalities on the roads in the county over the 12 year period from 2008 to date this year stands at 105, with the most tragic year being 2015, when there were 13 road fatalities in the county.
The breakdown of fatalities on the road over that period are; 2008: 10, 2009: 10, 2010: 8, 2011: 12, 2012: 7, 2013: 6, 2014: 11, 2015: 13, 2016: 4, 2017: 12, 2018: 9 and 2019: 3 (to date ).
The report also outlined that over the past six months the road safety office in Mayo County Council has rolled out 35 different road safety campaigns, including campaigns targeting pick-ups and drop-offs at schools, rural driving tips, bike week warnings for motorists, warnings of tailgating and driving while texting.
The office has also a number of campaigns planned over the coming months, including a schools' road safety calender art competition, Christmas Road Safety campaign, cylce training programmes, a road safety showcase and a new road safety plan.
