Three distinguished ambassadors from the 'Lublin Triangle'—a regional alliance comprising Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania—visited Technological University of the Shannon (TUS ), Athlone Campus, recently to discuss the economic, social, and political future of Europe in the context Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Led by Ambassador of Ukraine to Ireland Larysa Gerasko, the trio engaged in enriching dialogues with students and faculty and also fostered connections with local authorities and Athlone’s Ukrainian community.
A highlight of the visit was an insightful panel discussion held in the Douglas Hyde lecture theatre where, joined by Ambassador of Poland to Ireland Arkady Rzegocki and Ambassador of Lithuania to Ireland Marijus Gudynas, Ambassador Gerasko delved into pressing issues such as the importance of international security.
The lecture formed part of a series of talks, delivered annually, to the students of International Economics, lectured by Henry Joyce, enabling them to gain a practical understanding of global economic issues
The three ambassadors emphasised the significance of solidarity in supporting Ukraine's quest for victory, underlining the enduring bonds between Ukraine and Ireland.
The discussion also explored the economic ramifications of the conflict, shedding light on the strategic responses of the involved nations.
Amid concerns about the UN Security Council's efficacy and potential political and donor fatigue, the ambassadors reiterated their commitment to upholding the international legal order and supporting Ukraine's journey towards peace and stability.
The visit culminated in a meaningful exchange of gifts, symbolising the strengthened ties between Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Ireland.

Their insights and perspectives have enriched our discussions, reinforcing the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges," Acting Dean of the Faculty of Business and Hospitality Dr Michael Tobin, remarked.
Academic Excellence
Meanwhile, the academic accomplishments of 70 exceptional students at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS ), Athlone Campus, were celebrated at a prestigious Dean’s Honours List ceremony recently.
These students, hailing from diverse disciplines within the Faculty of Business and Hospitality, were honoured for their outstanding achievements during the past academic year.
The TUS Dean's Honours List, a hallmark of academic excellence, is bestowed upon students who maintain an exceptional first-class honour grade—equivalent to a 70% average—throughout their degree programme.
Dr Michael Tobin, currently acting in the capacity of Dean of Business and Hospitality, emphasised the significance of the award, stating that it serves as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging students to strive for excellence in their chosen fields.
"The awards are a highlight of the academic calendar, and the response from both students and faculty to this esteemed accolade has been overwhelmingly positive.
"For past recipients, it has served as a catalyst for sustained academic engagement, while for others, it has ignited a fervent desire for improvement," Dr Tobin said.
He underscored the importance of maintaining this high level of commitment throughout their academic journey, expressing his hope that the award will spur the awardees to continue their pursuit of excellence in both their studies and future careers.
Each awardee was presented with a certificate commemorating their exceptional academic performance.
As the ceremony drew to a close, Dr Tobin extended his heartfelt congratulations to all the awardees, wishing them continued success in their academic endeavours and beyond.
Established in 2018, the Dean's Honours List at TUS's Athlone Campus has become a symbol of academic distinction, recognising the outstanding achievements of students across the campus.
