One of the country’s most respected contemporary folk artists, Luka Bloom, is lending his support to the Geraldine Lavelle Trust and playing a fundraising gig in Matt Molloys on Wednesday July 16.

A 27-year-old Mayo woman is recovering from serious injuries sustained in a cycling accident last October. Geraldine Lavelle, Tullycommons, Castlebar, suffered a spinal fracture that left her paralysed from her chest down. Having spent several weeks in the Mater Hospital in Dublin, where she underwent major surgeries on her neck and spine, she is currently in the National Rehabilitation Hospital undergoing intensive rehabilitation. Now a major fundraising campaign has been launched to raise money for Geraldine’s recovery.

Research carried out at NUI Galway may advance the quest for new therapeutic approaches to the treatment of pain.

NUI Galway has announced the winners of the 2014 Alumni Awards. The awards will be presented at the 14th annual Alumni Awards gala banquet, taking place on Saturday March 1 in the Bailey Allen wing of Áras na Mac Léinn on the university campus.

New findings investigating the influence of a stress-sensitive genetic background on pain have been published in the leading journal in the field Pain, by NUI Galway researchers. The work, funded by Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council, was carried out by Dr David Finn and his research team in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Centre for Pain Research and Galway Neuroscience Centre at the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science, NUI Galway.

Dr David Finn of NUI Galway has been awarded the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland’s Doctor Award for best paper published in an indexed journal in 2012 in the Pain/Anaesthesia category.

The Galway Neuroscience Cluster, based within the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES) at NUI Galway, last week gained the status of Centre of Excellence in Neurodegeneration (COEN) after a national and international review process. By gaining COEN status, the Galway Neuroscience Cluster joins a select group of international centres that are entitled to apply for research funding that is awarded through this international initiative.

When I interviewed Dr. David Finn of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at NUI, Galway, I alluded at first to a statement I found in one of his recently published papers: “The study of stress-induced analgesia has enhanced our understanding of the fundamental physiology of pain and stress and can be a useful approach for uncovering new therapeutic targets for the treatment of pain and stress-related disorders.”
