Penney and Fahy secure gold at the National Senior Championships

Penney took gold in the High Jump with a best leap of 2.10 metres with a stunning series of jumping. Clubmate Darragh Kelly secured bronze with 1.95 metres. Penney later added bronze in the testing 110m Hurdles event.

The Galway Men’s Team won County Gold for the third year in a row, under manager Siobhan Kelleher, sharing the podium with Donegal and Kerry. The squad were led by Justin Lane, the inspirational captain of the men's team, and he also won the Pole Vault in a fine 2.30m clearance. He was fifth in the weight for Distance Throw.

Galway schools excel at Tailteann Games

Conor Penney of Calasanctius College and Craughwell AC was outstanding. He smashed the Tailteann Games High Jump record with a huge 2.09 metre effort. Penney leaped up to 2.05 metres clearing all heights on his first attempt, and then set the record initially by jumping over at 2.07m and added further to it when clearing 2.09m on his second attempt for an amazing victory.

Larry Cheevers

Larry was the eldest child of Jack and Ethel Cheevers who lived on Dalysfort Road in Salthill. They were the owners of the Forster Park Hotel and the iconic Park Café which was attached to it. Larry was educated in the Jes and in Castleknock College and went on to study dentistry in UCG — you could only do first year there at the time — and later in UCD where he finished the course and qualified.

Finlay Daly was the toast of Galway at Athletic Ireland's National Senior Championships in Santry Stadium at the weekend.

International Selection for McDonnell and Egan

Congratulations go to Robert McDonnell, and Andrew Egan of Galway City Harriers for their selection for the upcoming European U23 championships in Finland to be held later this month. Also selected was Aaron Keane who competes with University of Galway. All three are coached by sprint supremo Brendan Glynn of GCH.
