FANS OF AMERICANA are in for a treat at the Roisin Dubh with Rhode Island band The Low Athem playing at the intimate venue on Saturday week, June 16. Formed in 1006 by Brown University students and part-time DJs Ben Knox Miller and Jeff Prystowsky, the band made their mark with their 2007 debut album What the Crow Brings. Drawing on their background in classical music, they widened their instruments and sound to include everything from WWI- era pump organs to crotales (a form of antique cymbal). With the addition of new member Jocie Adamas in 2007, the band began 2008 in remote Block Island off the coast of New England.

The phone picks up and (in an admittedly biased way) I am expecting the sound of a laid back, overly blinged out, slightly arrogant musician. What I am not expecting is the polite, bubbly, and energetic Dublin accent that comes down the telephone line at me. It hardly paints a picture of your stereotypical hip-hop/rap star. But then again Messiah J & The Expert are hardly your stereotypical hip-hop duo.
