Christmas message from Westport Cathaoirleach Myles Staunton

It is a great pleasure for me as Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council on behalf of the elected members of the council to wish everyone in Westport and Mayo a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. I would also like to extend a special welcome to all those originally from Mayo who have come back to visit their families over the Christmas period and to say welcome home.

Westport town manager wants to reduce town’s rates

Town manager of Westport Peter Hynes has recommended in his Manager’s Report and draft budget for 2010 that members of Westport Town Council adopt a proposal for a a reduction in the rates on commercial and industrial property, setting it at 66.42, a reduction of 0.08 on the current rate of 66.50.

Westport suffering worst unemployment increases in Mayo

Unemployment is rising at an alarming rate in Westport where there are now 1,768 on the live register. The scenic town saw the largest percentage growth in unemployment in the county last month. The December figures show there has been a hike of 9.1 per cent or 147 on the November returns for Westport, and the situation has been described as “very worrying” by Dáil Deputy and Fine Gael spokesperson on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht affairs, Michael Ring.

Westport drops rates by two and a half per cent

Westport Town Council has struck a rate of 64.84, which makes it the lowest rate multiplier in the county. This rate was agreed at a budget meeting on Thursday night where councillors proposed a 2.5 per cent reduction on rates in the town. This, according to the Cathaoirleach of the town, Councillor Myles Staunton, sends out the message that “Westport is open for business”.

A local fundraising campaign in Westport to raise money for the Westport Town Hall is progressing well, with the project expected to go to tender in spring of this year.

Fish factory one source of persistent smell at Westport Quay

Following Westport Town Councillors’ condemnation of the persistent odour at the Quay, which particularly lingers in the location of the Quay Bar, investigations were carried out by the town council in association with the environmental section of Mayo County Council.
