Local Fine Gael Minister of State, Deputy Peter Burke, has confirmed that the gifting or sale of turf will continue to happen legally, and there will be no areas where turf burning is banned, in a reversal of the earlier policy tabled by the Green Party.

After the presentation, Cllr Peter Flynn, chairperson of the committee told the meeting: “We need to get to the bottom of this because what we heard today tells a different story from what we were told by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.”

In advance of an EU directive, expected to take effect on January 1, which would see turf cutting banned, Fine Gael Longford/ Westmeath Senator Nicky McFadden has said Minister Gormley must ensure that Ireland retains broad flexibility on how we maintain and use our bog lands.
