Flexibility on bogs must be secured - McFadden

In advance of an EU directive, expected to take effect on January 1, which would see turf cutting banned, Fine Gael Longford/ Westmeath Senator Nicky McFadden has said Minister Gormley must ensure that Ireland retains broad flexibility on how we maintain and use our bog lands.

“Turf cutting is an Irish tradition and a way of life in many parts of Ireland, and respect for local communities and traditions must be preserved. It is essential that Minister Gormley ensures that a level of flexibility is secured, where Ireland is concerned, on how we operate our bogs.

“During the Joint Oireachtas sub-committee on the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, the Creggan/ Crossword Turbary Group made a commendable contribution and presentation on the matter, as did IFA president, Padraig Walshe,” said Senator McFadden.

“I am calling on all rural Deputies to put pressure on the Minister to ensure that the rights of local communities and traditions are defended after the Directive comes into force.

“It is incumbent on Fianna Fáil, the Greens, and most importantly Minister Gormley to represent the interests of turf cutters all over Ireland by ensuring that flexibility on the future use of bog lands is achieved.”
