Galway County Councillors have agreed to the local authority taking an equity share in Ireland West Airport Knock, in an attempt to secure the future of the transport facility.

Monday’s meeting of Galway County Council meeting began on an extremely positive note with councillors clamouring to be associated with Apple’s announcement that it was constructing a new data centre in Athenry. Special mention was given to local area councillor Peter Feeney who was singled out by a number of representatives for doing trojan work to attract industry to the locality.

A civil servant received one of the coldest receptions ever afforded to a visitor at a Galway County Council meeting earlier this week when he gave a presentation on the National Broadband Plan. Sean Griffin from the Department of Communications was handed the unenviable task of delivering an update on the plan, and how it would affect long-suffering internet users in rural Galway. A Tuam councillor is calling on the Galway County Council to immediately submit a proposal to the National Roads Authority so that resurfacing works on the N63 can be carried out as a matter of urgency.

In the aftermath of last year’s local elections much attention has focused on Galway West and in particular on Fine Gael’s chances of gaining a seat there, but Galway East has been the subject of comparatively little attention.
