Mayo AC went over the border through the fog to Tuam on Sunday for the National Intermediate and Masters Cross Country championships. Tuam AC hosted the event at the Palace Grounds Park with the assistance of local clubs. They did an excellent job overall, providing a good testing course with some technical twists and cambers, and a firm grassy surface. The heavy chilly fog never lifted despite the best efforts of the February sun, but conditions were perfect for running.

Last weekend’s athletics action centred on Westport and Hollymount amid Sunday showers. The second leg of the Connacht Cross Country Championships for senior, novice, masters, took place after over 500 juveniles had completed eight races around the one kilometre lap course at Westport House. By the time the adult races took place the tough, twisting, hilly and in places slippery course, had become even more testing and many struggled with their footing. However there were some excellent racing performances. Sara Doohan (Corran AC) showed great form again and was the clear winner of the Senior women's 4k, adding to her victory in the first leg at Loughrea. Roger Barrett (Mayo AC) got in some useful training ahead of the Masters International Cross Country in Nottingham. He also easily won the senior men's race over eight laps. Finishing places over the two legs will determine the championship medals, but Doohan has definitely won the senior title with her two first place finishes. Three Mayo AC women ran in the Masters event, Pauline Moran, Chris Gallagher, Mary Moylette and they await the publication of results, as do Danny Green, Tom Hunt, David Dinsmore, and Tom Waldron who ran eight hard laps in the men's masters.

Mayo AC had a record 37 runners at the start for the 35th Dublin City Marathon on Bank Holiday Monday.

Elvery’s MacHale Park is the place to be this weekend, when the best eight senior club teams in the county do battle for a place in the semi-finals of this year’s club championship.

There was an excellent turnout for the third annual Charlestown 10k on Saturday. It was also the fourth race in Mayo AC's 2014 Move2Improve Series. The field of 194 was over 80 up on 2013, testament to great work by an enthusiastic local organising team led by Christina Duffy, who was ably assisted by Kilmovee 10k supremo John Roddy, and supported by a host of local sponsors.

Claremorris native Aine Gallagher (Mayo AC) took part in the fifth Energia Belfast 24-hour event last weekend. The event incorporated a 12-hour women's race. Aine was first to finish and completed a distance of 105k in the 12 hours - a personal best along with being a track record and a Irish record. Aine is no stranger to the ultra zone, as she has competed previously at Energia events and completed the Connemara Ultra marathon.

Joan Walsh and her Ballinrobe Fit4Life team did a great job as usual in organising the third race in Mayo AC Summer 5k Series on another very hot Tuesday evening. The water stop at 2.5k was very welcome, as was the shade of the trees from 3k. There was a great turn out with 226 finishers of the event with a lot of the ‘big guns’ of Mayo racing out in force on the course. The course was fast and flat and despite the heat there were plenty of PBs and happy faces at the finish line. The top three male finishers were Conor Dolan (GCH) in 15:49, TJ McHugh in 17:28, and Noel Gibbons (Mayo AC) IN 17:29. Catherine Conway was the first woman over the line in 18:49, with Sarah Syron (Mayo AC) in second place in 19:24, and Pauline Moran (Mayo AC) in third place in 20:59. The 34th Dublin City Marathon takes place this Bank Holiday Monday. Once again Mayo AC has a strong team entered, 26 in total - 17 men and nine women.

There were a number of Mayo competitors in the recent Tuam 8km event. There was lots of success for Mayo in the women’s event, with Mary Gleeson coming home in first position in a time of 29.38, just one place further back was her Mayo AC team-mate Colette Tuohy in a time of 30.32. In the women’s over 45 category Chris Gallagher from Mayo AC was first home in 33.41, with Pauline Gallagher claiming the W55 win in a time of 34.41 and Margaret Glavey completing the wins for Mayo AC in the W60. Other Mayo AC/Fit4Life finishers in the women’s event were Joan Walsh (35.16), Ann Fahy (36.35), Laura Heneghan (38.32), and Katie Concannon from Ballyhaunis meet and train (43.03).
