Ladies shine early in season at Tuam 8k

There were a number of Mayo competitors in the recent Tuam 8km event. There was lots of success for Mayo in the women’s event, with Mary Gleeson coming home in first position in a time of 29.38, just one place further back was her Mayo AC team-mate Colette Tuohy in a time of 30.32. In the women’s over 45 category Chris Gallagher from Mayo AC was first home in 33.41, with Pauline Gallagher claiming the W55 win in a time of 34.41 and Margaret Glavey completing the wins for Mayo AC in the W60. Other Mayo AC/Fit4Life finishers in the women’s event were Joan Walsh (35.16 ), Ann Fahy (36.35 ), Laura Heneghan (38.32 ), and Katie Concannon from Ballyhaunis meet and train (43.03 ).

In the men’s event Paddy O’Toole in a time of 27.48 was the top Mayo finisher coming home in eighth place, Anto Devaney was 10 places further back in a time of 29.32 and Dwayne Flynn rounded out the top 30 places with a time of 30.31. The race itself was won by Gerry Ryan from Craughwell AC in a time of 25.48 with Matt Bidwell coming second and Stephen McKeighe third.

Other Mayo AC finishers were Michael McNeela (30.54 ), Patrick Walsh (31.19 ), Enda Groarke (33.39 ), Tom Charles (36.47 ), Michael Ruane (37.00 ), Mark Fitzgerald (38.46 ). Chris O’Connell (40.05 ).

Walkin gets 2013 off to a good start

Mayo AC sprinter John Walkin from Castlebar began his 2013 season successfully at the Munster AAI Indoor championships in Nenagh recently. He competed as a guest, finishing third in the 60 metres in 7.91, and second in the 200 meters in 25.99. John trains indoor at the Claremorris AC centre. He will have his next outing at the AAI Indoor Games in the new Athlone AIT arena on this Sunday Sunday January 27.

Fit4Life is back for 2013

The Mayo AC Fit4Life 2013 programme is currently resuming at four locations and members will be preparing to register (new members very welcome too ). They will be able to get their new Mayo AC Fit4Life T-shirts which will give them an enhanced sense of identity alongside the familiar club vest.

Mayo AC Fit4Life Groups

Fit4Life is open to all over 18 years of age, annual membership is €40, trained team leaders are on hand in each venue to offer advice and information. Ballinrobe meet on Thursdays at 7.30 pm and Sunday 10am at the Green, beside soccer pitch; contact Joan: 087 6726029. Castlebar meet in the car park of Castlebar Tennis Club every Monday at 7pm and Thursdays at 8pm, further information from Ann McDonnell at 086 8635534 or Maggie at 087 6324252.

Ballyhaunis Meet and Train will meet every Tuesday at 7pm and on Saturday mornings at 9am at The Ball Court in The Friary Field. If anyone wants to go along and try it out, just turn up at either time. If you require any information contact Martin Fitzmaurice at 087 2455989.
