Our Lady’s Bower student, Amy Zhao (15) has claimed a prestigious prize in this year’s 66th Texaco Children’s Art competition, the awards for which were announced in recent times.

Local economy receives boost as Corrib Oil service station opens

The local economy received a boost this week with the opening of a new Corrib Oil Ltd. Texaco service station and food court on the Ballymahon Road in Athlone. The store which opened on Friday last is a welcome addition to the local business community with the creation of twenty jobs.

The Madden brothers came originally from near Ballinasloe. They emigrated to the US and when the depression happened, one of them, Jackie, made up his mind to remain in America, but the others decided to return to Galway and set up in business. Two of them, Willy and Charley, developed the nurseries on Taylor’s Hill, Miko opened a garage in Woodquay, and Jimmy built this garage at Nile Lodge with the help of his brother Willy. It was on a terrific location, situated on a junction of the two main roads from the city to Salthill.

Triple win for The Galway Plaza at prestigious industry awards

The Galway Plaza came out on top in the Motorway Service Station and Best Forecourt Facilities categories at the annual Ireland’s Forecourt & Convenience Retailer Awards. In what was a great night for Galway, Brian Joyce won Manager of the Year for The Galway Plaza as well. The awards recognise excellence of service and facilities at national level. The event took place at the Clayton Hotel, Burlington Road, Dublin.
