Shell E&P Ireland says it is still on schedule to have gas flowing from the Corrib Gas Field within the next six months.

The campaign group Shell to Sea has slammed the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources for selecting British consultancy firms Wood Mackenzie as the advisors on a new review of Ireland’s oil and gas fiscal terms.

In a report submitted to the UN Human Right Council on Monday, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, Margaret Sekaggya, called on the Irish Government to “investigate all allegation and reports of intimidation, harassment and surveillance in the context of the Corrib Gas dispute in a prompt and impartial manner”.

According to Shell to Sea on Wednesday 15 Shell to Sea campaigners entered Barrett's Quarry in Bangor and occupied vehicles in the quarry that were being used for the extraction of hardcore to be used as part of Shell’s onshore pipeline construction compound at Aughoose. This continued action is part of Shell to Sea’s continuing campaign against the project in north Mayo.

Shell to Sea has called for two days of action this weekend starting today, Friday April 1, and tomorrow Saturday April 2, at Aughoose where members claim that Shell E&P Ireland has started construction work on a 5km tunnel which will go under Sruwaddacon Estuary. However Shell E&P Ireland in response to the accusations from Shell to Sea, issued a statement denying it had started tunnelling works and said it was only carrying out site investigation works in preparation for construction and they had not actually started construction works. The statement from Shell E&P Ireland stated: “Shell E&P Ireland Limited is currently carrying out site investigation work on its own land in Aughoose. This is in preparation for the start of construction work on the onshore pipeline.”

Representatives of Shell to Sea and the Rossport Solidarity Camp have declined an invitation by local gardaí to a meeting to discuss “policing concerns” in relation to the Corrib gas project.

A motorised convoy took part in a rally on Sunday in support of jailed Shell to Sea protester Pat O'Donnell. The rally went from Mr O'Donnell's home place at Porturlin, travelled through much of Erris, and finished at Ballyglass Pier fishing port. Mr O'Donnell was sent to Castlerea prison recently for seven months for breaching the peace and obstructing gardaí.

Shell E&P Ireland have been granted a four-month extension by an Bord Pleanála to the previous deadline of February 5 for the submission of further information in relation to the onshore pipeline in Erris. The deadline has now been extended to May 31 to allow Shell more time to submit information which the Board requested in a four-page letter to Shell last November.

Following a week fraught with continuing tension between protesters and Shell E & P Ireland and the undertaking of a hunger strike by Maura Harrington, a resolve in the contentious issue may have been attained when at lunch time Thursday SEPIL released a statement in which it confirmed that “the Solitaire will leave Killybegs today for a UK port where deep water berthing facilities are available”.
