Shell to Sea invites senior gardaí to public meeting

Representatives of Shell to Sea and the Rossport Solidarity Camp have declined an invitation by local gardaí to a meeting to discuss “policing concerns” in relation to the Corrib gas project.

The invitation to meet was extended to the two groups by Superintendent Patrick Diskin of Belmullet Garda Station to meet with senior Garda management.

However, instead the groups have invited Supt Diskin and other senior members of An Garda Síochána to a public meeting in Inver Community Centre today (Friday, March 11 ) or some other date at Garda convenience.

“We do not engage in any meetings held behind closed doors – it was such meetings that led to the past 10 years of trouble with the proposed Corrib project,” said spokesperson for Shell to Sea Maura Harrington.

Terence Conway added: “Maura and I are spokespersons for Shell to Sea but we will not engage in private meetings on behalf of the community – the communities here have suffered at the hands of the State and Shell, and all people in the community have the right to have their many concerns heard in public.”
