The Galway senior camogie team will take on Cork this Sunday in the Irish Daily Star National League division one final at Semple stadium (1.30pm).

The Galway senior ladies camogie team relinquished their all-Ireland title last Sunday when they went down to a highly motivated and skilful Kilkenny outfit in the Liberty Insurance all-Ireland senior semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.

Sunday was a special day for anyone who has been involved with camogie in this county down through the years.

Despite being narrowly defeated in the All-Ireland final to Wexford, the Galway camogie team was honoured last weekend with the selection of six 2011 All Stars.

It is difficult to believe any county could suffer the heartbreak of losing five All-Ireland senior finals in any code in the space of 14 years. Yet that is the painfully cold statistic that faces Galway Camogie after another shattering defeat in a senior decider last Sunday in Croke Park.

Now it’s down to the real business.

Galway have qualified for the 2011 All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship semi-finals, which are fixed for August 13, after an impressive 0-12 to 0-9 victory over Kilkenny on Saturday.

Veronica Curtin, Galway’s only survivor from the All-Ireland camogie success of 1996, came off the bench last Saturday to inspire Galway to a 2-14 to 0-9 victory over their nemesis Wexford in the All-Ireland senior championship in Enniscorthy.

Nowlan Park is the setting next Sunday afternoon, when the Irish Daily Star National Camogie league semi-finals take place. Kilkenny are first in the arena at 2pm against Galway, followed at 3.45pm by Tipperary’s clash with defending League/All-Ireland champions Wexford.

Galway has only once won the All-Ireland senior title in camogie.That success was in 1996 and the current squad is keen to change that statistic this weekend when they take on Wexford for the O’Duffy Cup in Croke Park at 4pm.
