The emergence of regional technical colleges (RTCs) in the 1970s initiated one of the most significant developments in the history of third level education in Ireland. By bringing a strong technical orientation and widening access to higher education for citizens, the RTCs contributed significantly to economic, social, and cultural development across the country. The University of Galway Students’ Union has released a damning report highlighting the severe challenges faced by students seeking accommodation in Galway, with long commutes, sky-high rents, and widespread frustration pushing many to question their decision to attend college at all.

University of Galway Students’ Union launched their raise and give (RAG) week campaign. The events will all be taking place on the University of Galway campus Sunday, February 9 to Friday, February 14, to raise funds for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and Galway Autism Partnership. Fundraising events over the week will include a fire walk, a head shave, a charity auction, a 5km fun run, a Galentine’s day brunch, a five-a-side tournament and pop-up charity clothes and book shops.

The University College Galway Students' Union was originally established in 1911 as the Students' Representative Council. This council lasted only a short time but its reestablishment was proposed in 1913 and by the 1920s, it was firmly established. In the 1960s, it was formally developed into the University Students' Union, then known as Comhairle Teachta na Mac Leinn or CTM for short. It was formed in 1964, the function of the union as per the constitution was “to represent its members and promote, defend and vindicate the rights of its members at all levels of society.”
