Bernie O'Connell and the Board of Galway FC have been announced as Galway City Council Volunteers of the Year at the 11th Annual Mayor's Awards for Galway City on Tuesday night.

The Neighbourhood Watch in Shantalla is set to be re-established, a move which has been warmly welcomed by local councillor Colette Connolly.

The Shantalla Residents Association will hold its annual lunch for senior residents at the Clybaun Hotel on Sunday from 2pm to 6pm with a mulled wine reception at 1.30pm. There will be music and dancing from 4pm to 6pm.

In horse racing parlance it could be said that contenders are in the dip but have not turned into the straight yet and, in what has been forecast as the most competitive of all Wards, Galway City Central should prove to be the mother of all gallops.
