Deputy replies to his scything in Grassroots

It is with some trepidation that politicians read the Grassroots column in the Galway Advertiser. Having escaped its wrath for the past six years, there was a sense of inevitability when my own political travails finally came into the firing line of the column here last week.

On Tuesday evening the Dail voted at second stage on the Protection of Life in Pregnancy Bill (2013). As expected four of our Fine Gael TDs (Peter Matthews, Brian Walsh, Billy Timmins and Terence Flanagan) very courageously voted against the Bill. Next week, I, too will vote against the abortion bill. More FG colleagues are expected to follow in the coming days.

Abuse is the new discourse

When Enda Kenny stood up in the Dail yesterday and outlined the amount of bile and hate that is coming his way courtesy of his stance on the abortion legislation, he was reflecting a reality that ensures abuse is now a new form of discourse, being seen instead as a quicker way of getting your point across than searching and struggling manfully for a burst of eloquence that may never arrive.

For the first time ever, a television commercial will be aired to the nation advertising unplanned pregnancy and abortion advice by a clinic in an effort to confront the long-standing taboo surrounding abortions, and to equally raise awareness of sexual health.
