War of Independence talk to be held in Athlone
The War of Independence in the Midlands conference organised by The Old Athlone Society will take place in Custume Barracks, Athlone on Saturday November 26. The conference has been organised to mark the 90th anniversary of the end of the war. On display at the barracks will be the Sliabh na MBan armed car and a contemporary Peerless armoured car. A host of academics will be speaking on various topics connected to the War of Independence on the day, among them are Ian Kenneally and Dr William Sheehan.

Athlone councillors this week welcomed the establishment of Athlone Art & Heritage Ltd, a private limited company set up to manage the council’s artistic and heritage facilities including Athlone Castle and the new art gallery and artist studios.

This is the same team that produced the magnificent book on the Church of SS Peter & Paul which was very widely acclaimed.

Distilling in counties Westmeath and Offaly is the subject of the Old Athlone Society’s January lecture which will be given by Michael Byrne of Offaly Historical and Archaeological Society. The lecture will take place on Tuesday January 20 in The Prince of Wales Hotel at 8pm, and will be fully illustrated.
