Old Athlone Society hosts lecture on aerial photography

The forthcoming lecture organised by the Old Athlone Society will take place in the Prince of Wales Hotel, Athlone, at 8pm. on Tuesday April 27.

Dr Eamon O'Donoghue will be the lecturer on the night, speaking on archaeological aerial photography in the West of Ireland.

Eamon is a native of Roscrea, Co Tipperary. He studied both archaeology and medicine in University College Cork, and is now one of Ireland's leading eye surgeons and is based in Galway.

He has a lifelong interest in archaeology and history and is particularly interested in castles and is currently restoring Claregalway Castle in Co Galway, where he hopes to eventually live.

He is a skilled pilot of his own plane and spends much of his time carrying out aerial photography of sites that are of archaeological and historic interest.

In the course of his lecture, he will share with us some magnificient photography and will explain to significance in the advancement of our knowledge of the history and archaeology of any given area.

This lecture will give us a new perspective on the historical and archaeological sites that surround us.

Non-members of the Old Athlone Society are always welcome to attend. Admission is free.
