Athlone GAA rocked by passing of David Allen
Athlone GAA club and the wider Westmeath GAA community are coming to terms with the untimely passing last week of club stalwart David Allen (43), following a relatively short illness. Davy won medals at every grade including senior medals in 1988 and 1998 with his beloved Athlone. He made his senior debut in 1985 and provided cover as sub-goalie as recently as last summer.

Fresh from receiving his Art Director’s Guild award for his work on the recent blockbuster, Sherlock Holmes, Mullingar man Niall Moroney will attend his second Oscar ceremony next weekend after his department was nominated in the Best Achievement in Art Direction category.
Foster and Allen line up Ballina show
Foster and Allen are the only Irish artists to have had an album in the UK Album Charts every single year for 16 years from 1983 to 1999 and again for six years from 2002 to 2007. This amazing achievement is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. In December 1993 they beat Take That and Diana Ross to the number one spot in the British Pop Video Charts. Take That were number two and Diana Ross was number three. They have won numerous awards over the years and were honoured alongside Bono in the Hall of Fame. Foster and Allen were among a number of entertainers honoured at a special reception by Irish President Mary MacAleese. Foster and Allen have sales in excess of 19 million worldwide to date.

Big Maggie at Athlone Little Theatre
Rehearsals are well advanced for the Athlone Little Theatre production of Big Maggie, one of John B Keane’s most popular plays. Paddy Martin has assembled a sterling cast for this show, which runs at the Little Theatre from November 1 to 7. His direction is particularly well rewarded with the work of stalwart Anne Hoey who plays Maggie, thundering out her words with precision and ease.
