Achill move up to join the big boys

The two sides who will be joining the big boys of Mayo junior soccer next season are now known, as Achill Rovers clinched second place in the Premier Division with a dramatic 3-2 win away to Partry Athletic last Sunday. The islanders booked their place as Brandon McGing put them in front for the first time in the game with seven minutes left to ensure they pipped Bangor Hibs to the promotion spot. Partry who were battling to stay in the division themselves took the lead early on through Jason Duddy, before John Kiernan pulled them level five minutes later. Athletic went back in front before the breakthrough, Michael Seoighe heading home. However Achill dug deep and Sean McNamara levelled it up with 24 minutes left on the clock before McGing's late strike sealed the deal for them.

English and Knight to be honoured by Mayo League

The Mayo Football League has announced that the recipients of the prestigious Henry Downes Service to Football Awards for 2015 are Patrick English from Achill Rovers and Gerry Knight, Ballina Town. Padraig McHale, chairman Mayo Football League, said: “I would like to congratulate Patrick English and Gerry Knight on winning this prestigious award. They are certainly worthy recipients as both have given a lifetime of service to the game and are highly respected within the county and beyond. It is fitting that an award named after such a great servant is bestowed upon two gentlemen of the game.’’

Westport United retained the Elverys Sports Super League title on Sunday thanks to a 7-1 win over Conn Rangers at the Sports Park. They had to come from behind as Johnnie Cocozzoa gave the North Mayo side an early lead. Westport Utd under the tutelage of John Brennan this season rallied and pushed 3-1 clear at the break thanks to goals from Mark McNally, Joe Lawless and Pat Fitzgerald. It was more of the same in the second half where they put on a show for the Westport faithful.
