From the Abbey to the Áras - Connemara mare and foal focus of biodiversity partnership

On Monday morning, Gray Lass (affectionately known as “Snowy”) and her colt foal along with a small delegation of Kylemore Abbey staff made the 280km journey from Kylemore Abbey in Connemara to Áras an Uachtaráin in the Phoenix Park. “Snowy” and her six-week-old foal will take up residence in the front paddock of Áras an Uachtaráin for four months.

The practice of putting down stray horses and in particular mares in foal after five days unless they have been claimed by their owners was described as “something that I don’t think anyone with any decency can stand over,” by Independent Cllr Gerry Ginty this week.
