James Horan has made no changes from the team that defeated Galway in the Connacht final for Sunday's All Ireland quarter-final against Cork.

Over in the far corner of the field in Tuam on Saturday evening, the Mayo minor panel were involved in their warm down, while the Galway panel stood and sat around on the grass wondering what had just happened. The Mayo minor manager, Enda Gilvarry was just after watching his side battle their way to what looked a times to be an improbable victory and was a happy man. “Heart stopping stuff again” were the first words out of his mouth when asked his feelings on the game. It's the second year in a row his minor team have seen off Galway in dramatic fashion in the Connacht championship, as for him being worried in the build up to the game, Gilvarry was honest about having some fears. “To be honest, I was worried coming, Galway are an extremely good team, they were playing on their home patch, they took the game to us and really showed us up. I think the fact that they had a game last week was a benefit to them. It took us a long time to settle by when we did, we were there or there abouts. But we had to pull back a fairly significant lead.”

I thought the Mayo team looked a little bit spooked last Sunday in Hyde Park and I really do not know why they appeared that way. Some might suggest that Conor Mortimer’s surprise departure from the squad placed a difficult burden on Mayo. I don’t believe it did. As I stood to watch the presentation of the Nestor Cup, I engaged with a few Mayo supporters who were just as relieved that Mayo won the match. And I have to agree with their view which was that winning is the most important thing.

The Connacht council announced the decision on Wednesday saying: “Due to hazardous driving conditions and having checked the weather forecast for the weekend Connacht GAA Council has postponed the start of the FBD Insurance League until Sunday January 17.” Mayo were scheduled to open their FBD League campaign with a tie in Garrymore against the students from NUIG on Sunday, but all the ties have now been put back a week due to the snow and ice. Mayo will now start their campaign on Sunday week, and follow it up with a game at home to Sligo IT on Sunday January 24 in Charlestown, and wrap up the league stages on Sunday January 31 in Ballinlough against Roscommon. The home final for the league has been pencilled in for either Saturday February 20 or Sunday February 28, and the final against New York on Sunday October 10.
