There were 16 Mayo AC finishers in last weekend’s National 10k Championships which took place in the Phoenix Park over a notoriously tough course, made even harder by a strong blustery wind along with a number of hail showers.

Mayo Athletic Club’s new Move to Improve series has proven to be very successful in helping its members improve on their fitness levels and race times, according to organisers at the club.

A number of Mayo runners were in action last weekend and put in good showings at the Flatline Half Marathon in Athlone. Ballina AC's Nora Newcombe was the winner of the women’s event in a time of 79.57, coming off a good performance the week before in the Charlestown 10K and the Tullamore Half Marathon two weeks ago. There were 14 Mayo AC runners in the event using it as practice for the upcoming Dublin Marathon. John Byrne was the best Mayo AC finisher coming home in fourth place overall in a time of 73.26, Brendan Hession finished in 32nd place in a time of 80.27 which was a new personal best. The other Mayo AC finishers were Paul Reynolds, Sean Murphy, Ann McDonnell, Laura Heneghan, Val P Glynn, Monica Joyce, Tracy Durkan, Mags Connell, Rebecca McHugh, Trish Kavanagh, Barbara Ronayne, and Finian Joyce.

Six Mayo AC runners made the trip to Tullamore on Sunday for the National Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Harriers Stadium was full, busy, wet and there was a full seven hours of exciting events. The Mayo AC six were rewarded with a fine total of 10 medals. Angela O'Connor and John Byrne made their track debuts and enjoyed the experience. Both of them won medals in some very competitive category races. There were other fine performances too from Margaret Glavey and Pauline Moran.

It brought the traffic to a standstill while it passed up Bridge Street - but it wasn't a protest march. Cars beeped and people waved - but it wasn't a wedding. One hundred people rushed into action when the bell rang - but it wasn't a race.

There were a number of Mayo competitors in the recent Tuam 8km event. There was lots of success for Mayo in the women’s event, with Mary Gleeson coming home in first position in a time of 29.38, just one place further back was her Mayo AC team-mate Colette Tuohy in a time of 30.32. In the women’s over 45 category Chris Gallagher from Mayo AC was first home in 33.41, with Pauline Gallagher claiming the W55 win in a time of 34.41 and Margaret Glavey completing the wins for Mayo AC in the W60. Other Mayo AC/Fit4Life finishers in the women’s event were Joan Walsh (35.16), Ann Fahy (36.35), Laura Heneghan (38.32), and Katie Concannon from Ballyhaunis meet and train (43.03).

The annual Lough Mask swim challenge is complete for the second year and yet again proved its title as a challenge. Conditions were very testing and on the borderline of being rerouted to the plan B swim, however the nod was given after consultation between organisers and safety crew. The die was cast and the 8km Lough Mask challenge was the swimmers and kayakers Rubicon, from Paddy’s Pub Tourmakeady to Cushlough Bay, Ballinrobe.

Seven Mayo AC athletes won a total of 20 medals at the AAI National Masters Indoors Championships at Nenagh. As usual it was colder track-side than outside at this venue. Club chairman Padraic Cullina set the standard on Saturday in the combined events quadrathlon. He amassed a fine total of 1,419 points competing in the 60 metres, long jump, shot, and 1,000 metres to win gold. On Sunday, when the indoors championship events took place, he won gold in the long jump and silver in the high jump in over 50 category. Patrick Moran (over 55) won four medals — gold in the high jump, silver in both the long jump and 400 metres, and bronze in 1,500 metres. PJ Hall (over 50) was one of four Mayo AC athletes competing indoors for the first time. He won silver in 200 metres and bronze 60 metres. Breege Blehein-McHale (over 40) won gold and silver medals. Ann Murray (over 45) won three silver medals in the 800m, 1,500m, and 3,000m, and Anthony Devaney (over 35) won silver in the 3,000m and bronze in the 800m. Tom Hunt (over 60) was second in the 400m and 3,000m and third in 800m and 1,500m. This was a great start to the championship year for Mayo AC and they will be looking to add to this medal haul at the intermediate and masters cross country at Forest Park in Boyle on February 21.
