A new exhibition on the Shroud of Turin, a relic that has fascinated theologians and academics for centuries, is to open in Knock Museum on April 1.

The story of Knock and the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary, St Joseph, and John the Evangelist, in the small, hillside village 135 years ago, has been well-documented in Mayo and beyond. Few people who attended a school in this county could have managed to get through without hearing it at least once or twice.

A number of heritage projects in Mayo received financial grants and support throughout 2011 under the Heritage Council Grant Scheme.

National Heritage Week will take place from August 21 to 29 and Mayo will showcase a number of events.

Knock Museum was this week highly commended in two categories at cross border Museum Awards which were hosted by the Heritage Council, in partnership with the Northern Ireland Museums Council to coincide with International Museums Day.
