Holmes ends his season on a high with new personal best record

National 100m sprint champion, Jonathan Holmes, ended his track season on a high with a personal best performance in Heat 3 of The Diamond League in Brussels on Friday night.

The St Patrick’s Day 5K DASH organised by Kilkenny City Harriers and Kilkenny Fit4Life Club proved to be an enjoyable and very successful event with just over 250 taking to the road and a further 100 plus juveniles on the track. Mayor Malcolm Noonan started the run which commenced at The Watershed and followed a course along the Bennettsbridge Road, a circle of The Castle Park and back to The Watershed.

Gowran have novice champions

Gowran athletes were very much to he fore at the Kilkenny novice championships in Kilmacow on Sunday. In the ladies 3K race it was sisters, Maria and Gretta who were first and second respectively. They set a steady pace from the start and there was never really a doubt but that they would share the first two places. With Lisa Kennedy in fifth place the Gowran club captured the Novice Shield. Sarah Dollard, St Senan’s was third, Elaine O’Reilly, Thomastown was fourth and Tracey Malone, St Joseph’s was sixth.

The County Kilkenny road championships were held on the Grovine/Waterford road circuit in glorious sunshine on Sunday last.

Good running on track

The County Kilkenny track and field championships continued in Scanlon Park on Friday night with an entirely adult programme of events. While the experiment did not work in that the hope for increased turnout did not materialise, the resulting competition suggests it is an experiment worth continuing for at least another year.
