National Junior Track and Field Championships

A number of Kilkenny junior athletes travelled to the National Junior Indoor Championships at the weekend.

They competed with some success, with a medal haul of two golds, two silvers and a bronze between them.

KCH’s Lorraine O’Shea won gold in the long jump with 5.51m, while on Saturday, David McGeary was the silver medalist in the combined events pentathlon competition – with a points total of 2,857.

On Sunday Sophie Parkinson of Gowran AC won gold in the shot put, with 12.29. Emma Fenlon of St Joseph’s AC finished in fourth place.

Richard Schoeman from St Joseph’s took bronze in the 400m, while Eoin Power (St Joseph’s ), was second in the 60m hurdles, and Jack Saunders was fourth in the 200m.

County cross-country

For the second week in a row, Kilmacow Sports Complex was the venue this time for the county championships.

The B Championships for Juveniles threw up some exciting races and close finishes. It was great to see the St Kieran’s Club from Johnstown once again participating in the county championships. Indeed, St Kieran’s provided the winner of the boys’ under-7 race, with Daniel Hanrahan claiming the honours. Gowran teams did well, winning three sets of juvenile team golds and also won team gold in the junior men’s event.

The juniors were fresh from their recent Leinster success, and Rachel Butler (St Senan’s ) was the winner in the women’s race with Sinead Whelan and Maeve O’Connor (Thomastown ) taking silver and bronze. Once again Shawn McCormack showed good form and won the Junior men’s race with ease. Team mates Sean Scott and Oliver Mulally (St Senan’s ) finished in the bronze medal position. Gowran were the winners of the team race.

The O/35 race was won in style by Gowran athlete Jimmy Barcoe. Barcoe was followed home by Eoin Molloy of KCH, and Patrick Bookle (St Joseph’s ) finished third. The team race was close, with St Joseph’s packing well to pip Gowran for the gold by two points.
