THE ACCLAIMED Scottish pianist and composer James Ross and students from the Galway Music Education Partnership will be in concert this Saturday from 7pm.

THE SCOTTISH composer James Ross has been appointed the first Composer in Residence to the Galway Music Education Partnership and he will be working with youth orchestras and composers in Galway.

Kiltoom girl Orla Shine is making waves in the dance world, having won a place on a prestigious dance project. The 24-year-old from Moyvannion, Kiltoom is one of just six Irish students to secure a place on the Step-Up Dance Project currently being held at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick.

Busking is the practice of performing in public places for tips or gratuities. The earliest buskers in Galway were probably singers who would sing on the street, and then knock on doors in the hope of getting money or food. In the early 20th century, Johnny Doran and his family would move around playing in different places, including the races, and then in the evening outside the Imperial Hotel. Paddy Philbin, who later became a dancing master, would dance for him and they drew big crowds. Later came the Reaney brothers who played in various locations in Galway city and county.

Ernestine Healy, from Castlebar Co Mayo has been appointed as the director of the Blas Summer School which takes place in the University of Limerick. Ernestine is a qualified secondary school teacher, currently on a career break and now working as a full-time lecturer in the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick. Having occupied the position of Acting Course Director on the Graduate Diploma in Music Education post-graduate programme during 2008/09, she is now lecturing on the BA in Irish Music and Dance undergraduate programme.

MÍCHEÁL Ó Súilleabháin, a major figure in Irish music for his unique compositional style that marries Irish trad with classical, jazz, and world music, will play the Lough Rea Hotel and Spa on Friday March 19 at 8pm.
