Bon Secours Hospital Galway, accredited by Joint Commission International, was recently awarded the 2013 NISO/NISG All-Ireland Major Safety Award for Medical Services. Business category awards are awarded to organisations which have met a minimum high standard (distinction level) and who are best within their business category. This is the hospital’s second submission - in 2012 it was the recipient of a distinction in the Prestigious Award category.

Last week business and pleasure coincided for me nicely: I found myself in Co. Sligo, where I have roots and relatives aplenty. Responding to the Government’s proposal to absorb the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) in a new Business Inspection and Licensing Authority (BILA), the National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO) is instead proposing the establishment of a national safety authority covering occupational, road, rail, aviation, maritime, fire, farm and public safety to create efficiencies without negating the role of various health and safety agencies.
