On Tuesday evening, as I left the office and was making my way to the car, I spotted a couple. Obviously tourists because they were holding hands with that foreign great hair look about them, with colourful jackets and a bearing that made them stand apart from the Irish, but blend in with the hundreds of visitors on the street at that time.

The parents of a Swiss Engish language student who was murdered in the city say people are honouring “their angel” by helping others through the foundation which was set up in her memory.

Five years ago today, this city and county was reeling from the shock that a young languages student had been attacked and murdered just 10 minutes away from the city centre. In the half decade since, the name of Manuela Riedo has become known in nearly every household in this region. More so than the dozen or so other people who has lost their lives violently in Galway city and county over the past decade or so. The memory of Manuela though has been kept strong by the randomness of the incident and the fact that Ms Riedo was but a few days into her trip to Galway. It was an incident that sent shockwaves through the region as a collective sense of shame and guilt was verbalised, as people rushed to protect the notion that Galway was a safer place to be after dark than any other. We now know that it was not, as several other serious fatal and non-fatal violent atacks in the city centre have since illustrated.

To mark the third anniversary of Manuela Riedo’s tragic death in Galway in October 2007, a number of events will be taking place next week.

The Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Manuela Riedo Foundation are continuing their commitment to work together on the forth coming fund raising concert, A Night for Manuela to be held in the Salthill Hotel on October 8.

THE PARENTS of murdered Swiss teenager Manuela Riedo have written a letter of appreciation to the people of Galway for their support during the ordeal of their daughter's death and for backing the concert held in her memory.
