Westmeath goalkeeper and captain Gary Connaughton has opted to spend the remainder of the summer in the US. The decision by the long-serving custodian is a major blow to both his club Tubberclair and of course to Westmeath ahead of the qualifiers. Connaughton’s safe pair of hands, point saving ability and booming kick-out, along with his determination and experience, leave a big void to be filled at both club and county level. Tyrrellspass man Darren Quinn is set to take over the number one spot for the qualifiers.

The pressure is mounting ahead of this weekend’s relegation finals in Westmeath’s senior and intermediate championship. Athlone and Tubberclair will battle it out in Tang on Saturday evening at 6pm. At the same time in Rosemount Moate and Ballinagore go head to head for the right to retain their intermediate status.
No fairytale ending for Garrycastle or Tubberclair
It is better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all. While the footballers of Garrycastle and Tubberclair will be disappointed this week to have fallen short at the final hurdle in Leinster, they can take solace in the fact that they did what very few club players ever get the chance to do - represent their club in a provincial final. In doing so they put Westmeath football back in the spotlight after an eminently forgettable year on the county scene.
